She’s Great

picture-1

Good Friends

I don’t remember the first time that I met Colin Wright.  It was probably at some JMU event for over-involved-undergrads-that-can’t stuff-enough-extracurriculars-into-their-planners (more on my college experience later) or maybe at a football game while screaming creative ways for the opposing running backs to tear their ACLs, or just general obscenities (yea, I swear sometimes, whoops).  But I do remember when we became life long friends.  It was at some point during 2006 when we made a humorous attempt at co-directing student leadership program on campus.

Like most great friendships there wasn’t really a identifiable turning point where all of a sudden we were bros and five minutes before we were just two dudes sizing each other up and making shallow judgments on the other’s character (yeaaa laugh it up, but I bet you did the same thing earlier this week).  It was more like a smooth transition.  Our collective experiences and struggles that year brought out the best and worst in each of us and we were quickly built into a great team.  Which, naturally, led to an equally solid companionship after the leadership had ended.

I’m grateful for Colin’s ability to question everything and the way he challenges notions that I have passively accepted my entire life.  Many of conversations that we have spur me on to dig deeper into my faith in Jesus, if only to come up with answers to the increasingly bizarre stream of questions surrounding Christianity that he brings to the table.  I’m also thankful for the way that our friendship stays constant despite living on opposite sides of the country and no longer having the shared experience of college life.  I never worry about the time that passes between our correspondences because I know that we’ll easily be able to pick right up where we left off.  (Note: Exhibit A which is also my reason for writing this post)

So here’s to you C.  Thanks for the way you challenge and encourage me to never stop seeking truth.  You are most definitely the man.

Long Time No Blog

I know I know, it’s been forever.  “Four months ago” according to the convicting chrono-ranking system on Sara’s ever-entertaining contribution to the blog world.  And yet, here I am. Back in my kitchen. In front of my Macbook. Missing you, faithful readers.  Well, all three of you at least.

Life has moved forward since we last met in mid-July.  You, perhaps, clad in warm weather clothes with some sort of iced beverage beside you, perusing your RSS feeds instead of working while I reclined leisurely on my front porch wicker chair.   Now seated dangerously close to my baseboard heater, in a scarf and wool socks looking at a gray sky, I’m reminded that life has moved forward indeed.

Fall was/is good.  Hectic. Challenging. Transitional. But when isn’t life going to toss you two out of those three.

Things I can be certain of:

- God is in control, and He is good.
- Fall in Charlottesville is amazing
- I need a Masters degree if I want to work at a university.
- I really like good coffee.
- Starbucks is not good coffee.
- Cooking = Stress relief.

I hope that you are well in this season.  I’ve found that December seems to disappear faster every year.  Which is unfortunate because these in between week are some of my favorites.  Here’s to finding the time to slow down and enjoy the advent.

Moved in on June 1st. Now–almost two months later–I am finally introducing you to my new house . In efforts to return to a residence based around community I have moved in with John (of JMU) and Isaish (of the Fellows program) and we are laboring together on what it means to live in intentional community with each other.

We live in a edgy little part of downtown C’ville called Belmont, on the bottom floor of this sweet house that has been converted into two 3BR aprtments. I love our neighborhood because it is so eclectic. The houses, the people, and the establishments, all blend together with kind of a funky hipster vibe. Better yet, biking and walking can take you anywhere you need to go.

More on Belmont later.

Highlights of the new casa include…

- Front porch AND back deck.
- Amazing proximity to the best parts of Charlottesville.
- Big kitchen. Lots of natural light.

Visuals.
